MACEF Design Award 2007
LATEST PROJECT
The last project was designed for the Designboom + MACEF Design Award 2007 competition. The topic of the competition was ceramics tableware for breakfasts. There were more than 4500 participants for this years competition. The results will be announced on 20th of January.

I have participated with the coffee cup design for the breakfasts. Saucer of the coffee cup was in form of a maze so that the user plays with the coffee drops inside. Generally when we are drinking the coffee, it drips from the cup to its saucer.
Aim of the project was to reuse these drops and make the office hours and breakfasts more enjoyable. You may find more information about the project in product design page.

UPCOMING PROJECT
Currently working on the new lamp design project in collaboration with Celik Dizayn. Project will have the chance of being exhibited in 2007 Milano Design Fair. This will be my second project to be exhibited in Milano Design Fair after the Mi+esso project which was exhibited in 2004 Milano Design Fair. The project was the part of the 5 Senses of Istanbul course which was Advanced Design Project course of the postgraduate ID program of Istanbul Technical University in spring 2006.

Product basically consists of 5 segments. These segments represent the civilizations lived in Istanbul. The segments are set parallel onto each other. The basic idea is that the light reaches outside from these segments getting purified. If the segments are slide to sides, crescents are formed one within the other on the floor and the ceiling. Soon you may find more information about the project in product design page.

5 Senses of Istanbul
was inspired by the documentary movie "Crossing the Bridge: Sound of Istanbul" (Dr. Fatih Akın, 2005) was directed by Turkish designer, Aziz Sarıyer and the staff of ITU Dept. of Industrial Product Design. Designers such as İnci Mutlu, Tanju Özelgin and Otto Von Busch also contributed to the project in different stages. With this project ITU has been invited 2nd time in 3 years to SaloneSatellite (Salone del Mobile), and 5 Senses of Istanbul will be exhibited in SaloneSatellite during the Milan Design Week 2007.

ESAD de Reims
ESAD DE REIMS
2007 spring semester, I will be studying at the ESAD de Reims (France) as an socrates-erasmus exchange student. The school of fine arts was founded in 1748 under the auspices of the town of Reims. In 1992, the French ministry of culture and the town of Reims made the school into a school of fine arts and design, named Ecole Supérieure d'Art et de Design de Reims (ESAD).

The ESAD holds an Erasmus University Charter. Thus, it offers many student exchange possibilities with other partner institutions. The ESAD de Reims totalises about 200 students in its different branches: fine arts, graphic design and product design. As for teachers, they are about 40, which makes 5 students for each lecturer. Product design program of ESAD de Reims is more specialised on culinary design and spatial design. C'est tout. Au revoir...

RESEARCH
At ITU, I am doing my thesis work on sustainable design. I expect to finish my thesis by the end of May 2008:
Sustainablity subject always renews its self and even its definition. From the 60's starting with the term Green Design and modified into the Environmental Design in 90's. Today subject covers whole process and the life-cycle of the product that is why it is mentioned as sustainable design. Dynamic structure makes the subject interesting. Other interesting sitiuation is that why the medium-sized companies do not perform sustainability design although they can forecast its economical benefits.

The research problem is sustainable design approach of medium sized manufacturing companies in Turkey from the economical perspective. It is an interesting future topic because world's resources seems to exhaust each day. As a result, raw materials prices increase. This shows the importance of sustainable design looking from the economical perspective especially for the countries which continuously tends to consume, especially developing countries such as Turkey. Currently, sustainablity subject is important at macro-scale in Turkey. On the other hand, this will be a future topic for micro-scale economy of Turkey for medium-sized manufacturing companies in Turkey when they start to feel the economical weight of this congestion.

Aim of this this research is to find out situation of sustainable design understanding in the medium-sized manufacturing companies in Turkey. Also to reveal the sustainable design approaches of the medium-sized manufacturing companies in Turkey whether it is planned or it is used just as an marketing strategy or used for adapting to the standards of the countries which the companies exports. Finally to discover the outcomes of use of sustainable design in the means of eco-efficiency.
